“Do you wash your hair every day?”

Those were the words my hair stylist asked me when I asked her why my hair color wasn’t lasting. I sheepishly said, “yes” and she said, “stop in the name of love.”

I can’t be sure if those were her exact words but you get the idea. Not only did washing my hair every day cause my color to not last as long (cha-ching), it actually made my hair more oily and less healthy.

I had washed my hair every day my entire life except for those early newborn days when everything is a haze and you aren’t sure what day it is and merely operate in a 3-hour cycle of eat, wake, and sleep. So, the concept of not washing my hair every day was new to me. However, I was pretty excited about all those minutes I spent washing, drying, and styling my hair every day that I could reallocate to other things.

Of course, I wanted to know how to transition from washing my hair every day and any tips that would help me in my new non-hair-washing habits. Since sharing is caring you better believe I am going to share the 10 best tips with you!

10 Tips for Not Washing Your Hair Every day

Start by washing it every other day. Slowly, over time you can train your hair and go 3 to 7 days between hair washes.

When you do wash your hair, shampoo it twice. Often times, one shampoo does not fully wash out the build-up since your last wash.

Less is more. Use a dime-size of product. In our culture, if a little is good, a lot is better, but not when it comes to shampoo.  Just a little bit goes a long way.

Let your hair airdry. On the days you wash your hair, if you have time, allow your hair to air dry. The less heat you have to apply the better for your hair health.

Use a silk pillowcase. The smooth silk surface will help reduce bed head. While it’s cute on your toddler, it’s not so hot in the car drop-off lane at school.

Find a good dry shampoo. My favorite economical brand is Batiste (under $5). I also love Living Proof Dry Shampoo ($15). Spray the dry shampoo into your roots and areas prone to oiliness and then gently massage it in. Did anyone ever use baby powder in their hair? I think it was the original dry shampoo, but I digress.

Use a hair dryer to provide volume to limp hair. On non-hair washing days, flip your head over and apply some heat to those limp locks for extra volume.

Perfect some new hairstyles. The messy bun has been made famous by moms around the world. Braids are also really popular, and you can always go classic with a simple ponytail. I like to curl my hair on day 2 when a little more product helps hold the curl while I prefer an up-do on days 3 or 4.

Find a good hat. Never underestimate the power of a good baseball or stocking cap to mask the unwashed hair. There are so many darling options on the market these days. Find one you love and head out the door confidently.

Ask your hairstylist for tips. Every time I go to my hair stylist I ask her about what I should do with my hair. She is so knowledgeable and always willing to lend her expertise with me. Usually, I am sitting in that chair for a while so I have lots of time to learn how to care for my locks.

So, do you wash your hair every day?

I know everyone has different hair needs but once I stopped washing my hair every day I did notice my color held longer, my hair felt healthier, I got more creative with how I styled it, and I gained minutes back in my day that I could devote to other pressing tasks.

I stopped washing my hair every day and you should too, who knew?
